Massachusetts has one IKEA store, in Stoughton, south of Boston. IKEA also lists pick-up points in Somerville, Franklin and Bourne, the last one close to the Cape Cod Canal. Boston has its own page.
Central and western Massachusetts are further from Stoughton. From Worcester County, the Pioneer Valley or the Berkshires, the drive adds up, and for the Springfield area IKEA New Haven, in Connecticut, may be closer. On Cape Cod, the Islands and the North Shore, ordering cabinets online and custom doors separately is often easier than a store run.
Massachusetts has its own rules for home improvement work. Contractors working on existing owner-occupied homes of one to four units generally must be registered as Home Improvement Contractors, and contracts over $1,000 must be in writing. Ask a refacer for their HIC registration number, and if you order shipped doors, check who will install them. Older New England houses often have uneven floors and walls, so ask for scribe strips.
Stoughton is the only IKEA store in the state, and IKEA New Haven in Connecticut may be nearer for the Springfield area. For custom doors it doesn’t matter where the cabinets come from. Upload your IKEA plan to Fronts, compare a local contractor’s installed price with a maker who ships, and choose what suits your budget and timeline.
For most work on an existing, owner-occupied one-to-four family home, yes: the state requires Home Improvement Contractor registration, and contracts over $1,000 must be in writing. You can check a registration with the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation’s lookup. Buying fronts that ship to you is separate; the rule applies to whoever does the installation.
