Mississauga doesn’t have an IKEA store of its own, but it sits between two. IKEA Etobicoke, on The Queensway just past Highway 427, is a quick hop for Port Credit, Lakeview, Cooksville and the east side of the city. IKEA Burlington, on Plains Road East, can be the easier run from Erin Mills, Meadowvale and Oakville. Either one is where you would buy SEKTION boxes, hinges and the drawers that sit inside.

The fronts are a separate decision. Custom doors for IKEA kitchens can turn a standard layout into something that suits a Streetsville semi, a condo near Square One or a newer family home in Churchill Meadows.

Some Mississauga homes already have an IKEA kitchen from an earlier renovation. If yours went in before 2015, it may be the older AKURUM system, which has a different hole pattern from SEKTION. Check before you order, because fronts are made to suit one system or the other.

How do I tell whether my kitchen is AKURUM or SEKTION?

Open a cabinet and look at the side wall. IKEA says AKURUM cabinets have a single row of holes along the edge, while SEKTION cabinets have a double row. AKURUM was replaced in February 2015, so a kitchen installed before then is likely AKURUM. Tell the maker which system you have, because sizes and hinge positions differ.

It’s wise to confirm final sizes once the boxes are up and level, especially for end panels, fillers and anything that meets a wall.
