Custom fronts for IKEA kitchens across California

California has eleven IKEA stores. In the north they’re in East Palo Alto, Emeryville, San Francisco (a small store) and West Sacramento; in the south, Burbank, Carson, Costa Mesa, Covina and San Diego, plus small stores in Arcadia and Culver City. Plan and order points with pick-up are in Manteca, Pleasanton, Ontario, Thousand Oaks, Escondido and San Diego’s South Bay, and IKEA lists pick-up points from Santa Rosa and Benicia to Fresno, Fullerton and Chula Vista. Los Angeles and San Francisco have their own pages.

Large parts of the state are a long way from any of them: the North Coast, the Sierra foothills, the southern Central Valley, the Central Coast and the desert. There, ordering IKEA cabinets online and sourcing custom doors separately is often the practical route.

If someone will install your doors, check their license. California’s Contractors State License Board requires a license for jobs of $1,000 or more in labor and materials, a threshold that rose from $500 on January 1, 2025. A maker who only ships doors to you is a different arrangement, but the same rule applies to whoever you hire to hang them.

Questions about custom IKEA doors and fronts in California

I live far from any California IKEA. Can I still get custom doors?

Yes. Order the cabinets online for delivery or for collection at a pick-up point such as Fresno or Santa Rosa, and order the doors separately from a maker who ships flat-packed fronts. Ask for a delivered price to your ZIP code, then hire a licensed local installer, or fit them yourself if you’re comfortable adjusting hinges.

Does a door installer in California need a license?

For larger jobs, yes. The Contractors State License Board says a license is needed for work of $1,000 or more, counting labor and materials, and smaller jobs are exempt only when no permit is needed and no employees are used. You can look up any license number on the CSLB website before you hire.
