Order: IKEA work confirmed first, then the most local, then by name. Nobody can pay to move up this list.
Denver’s dry air is the first thing to think about when choosing kitchen doors here. Wood gives up moisture in a dry climate, especially in a heated house in January, and fronts made somewhere damper can shrink a little after they arrive. A good maker plans for that. So should you.
For the IKEA side of the kitchen, metro Denver has one full store: IKEA Centennial, on East IKEA Way in the south metro. It is a fair drive from Arvada, Boulder or Thornton, but it is where most people see the cabinets in person and pick up hinges, drawers and inner fittings. South of the metro, the IKEA Colorado Springs plan and order point books kitchen planning appointments. IKEA has also announced a store for Fort Collins.
Your doors and drawer faces come from independent makers. Some are local refacers who measure your kitchen in Wash Park, the Highlands or Lakewood and fit the doors themselves. Others build custom doors for IKEA cabinets from your plan and ship them flat-packed. Either way, ask how the custom fronts are built for dry conditions: stable cores, sealed edges, painted MDF or veneer, and solid-wood panels that are free to move.
IKEA kitchen refacing is a sensible project for a Denver home because it keeps the boxes, plumbing and counters where they are. Let new fronts sit in the room for a few days before they are hung.
They can move, and painted solid-wood doors sometimes show fine lines where the panel meets the frame in winter. That is the wood shrinking, not a defect. Floating panels, sealed edges and stable cores reduce it, and painted MDF or veneered fronts move less. A room humidifier during the heating season also helps.
For much of the metro, Centennial is still the nearest IKEA. South of the city, the Colorado Springs plan and order point books kitchen planning appointments. IKEA has announced a Fort Collins store, so check its store page for status before planning a trip. You can also use IKEA’s online planner and have the cabinets delivered.
Often, yes. AKURUM cabinets were sold before SEKTION arrived in 2015, and their door sizes and hinge positions differ from SEKTION. Measure each door and note the hinge holes, then ask makers whether they build to AKURUM sizes. If the boxes are sound, new fronts can make the kitchen look current without replacing it.
