Custom doors for IKEA kitchens in Seattle: what to know

Seattle kitchens range from 1920s Craftsman houses in Wallingford and Ballard to new condos around South Lake Union, and IKEA cabinets turn up in all of them. When the boxes are sound but the doors look tired, or when you want more than the standard range offers, the answer is often custom doors for IKEA cabinets from an independent maker.

The Seattle area’s full IKEA store is in Renton, on Southwest 41st Street, south of the city. It is where most people collect cabinet frames, hinges and inner drawers. On the Eastside, IKEA opened a plan and order point in Redmond Town Center in February 2026. It offers one-on-one kitchen planning, and IKEA says in-home measuring is available there for kitchens. That is handy for Bellevue, Kirkland and Sammamish.

With the IKEA side planned, choose your custom fronts. A local refacer can measure, supply and install. A maker further afield can build to your plan and ship the doors ready to hang. Ask about wood species and finish; painted fronts and veneered panels tend to stay flatter than solid wood as indoor humidity changes between wet winters and dry summers.

Permits are rarely the hurdle. Seattle’s building department lists installing kitchen cabinets among jobs that usually don’t need one, which makes IKEA kitchen refacing one of the simpler upgrades you can make in an older house.

Questions about custom IKEA doors and fronts in Seattle

I live on the Eastside. Do I still have to drive to Renton to plan an IKEA kitchen?

Not anymore. The IKEA plan and order point in Redmond Town Center opened in February 2026 and books kitchen planning appointments. IKEA also lists in-home measuring for kitchens from that location. Orders can be delivered or picked up there. You would still go to Renton, or order online, for anything you want to take home the same day.

Do I need a Seattle permit to put new fronts on my IKEA cabinets?

Generally no. Seattle’s building department lists installing kitchen cabinets among work that usually doesn’t need a permit. Moving a sink, adding circuits or taking out a wall is different and can need permits. If your project mixes new fronts with other changes, check with SDCI before you start.

How do wood fronts cope with Seattle's damp winters?

All wood takes on and gives off moisture, so solid-wood doors can swell slightly in a humid season and shrink when the heating runs. Good makers allow for that with frame-and-panel construction, sealed edges and stable cores. Painted MDF and veneered panels move less. Ask your maker how their doors are built, and let new fronts sit in the house for a few days before fitting.
